THE MOON & SUN: "Apparent" Size Comparison ( coming soon! )
The Sun's diameter is about 400 times the Moon's. Coincidentally, the Sun is also about 400 times further away! Because our Earth's and Moon's orbits are both essentially elliptical, sometimes the Moon appears larger in our skies than the Sun, and sometimes the reverse is true. With this script's intriguing animations, you'll witness for yourself which is the case at any instant! This is especially important during a central solar eclipse, because it determines whether the eclipse is total or annular.
Even if you're an astronomy enthusiast, you've probably never seen anything like this before, and we can say the same about a number of our offerings. Just wait until you see this script's eclipse and transit examples! They're awesome!
REMEMBER! It is never safe to look directly at the real Sun with the naked eye! And looking at it through a telescope or binoculars—even for just an instant—can cause permanent blindness! NEVER DO IT! Consult the professionals at your local planetarium or observatory to learn how you can safely "observe" the Sun and any SOLAR eclipse!
